Okay, I’m mad I didn’t know about this book back when I was at nerd camp crushing hard on a cute girl (although, spoiler, things go much better in this book than they did for me). Nic and Battle meet at a summer program for gifted students where they fall in love, learn about archaeology, and struggle through a myriad of family issues. One thing I really loved about this was the matter-of-fact attitude Nic takes toward their relationship. There’s very little hiding for her, Nic tells friends, archaeology class acquaintances, and her teacher about the struggles of being young and in a brand new relationship without the shame we often see in stories like this. It’s courage I know I would not have had, but that at least I can read about. Breaking with tradition, I actually really like first love/coming out novels because I love watching the characters grow into their feelings and emerge with freedom and confidence they didn’t have before. This book is funny (Nic’s observations of the whole cast of characters add a whole other dimension to the story) and sweet and beautifully portrays that unique LGBT experience of discovering who you are and loving every bit of it.
