GIRL I GOT YOU this isn’t even gonna be a top five this is just gonna be a rec list while I scream in excitement
if you wanna start a lil more mainstream I’d check out DC’s Bombshells series; it’s basically a WW2 au fic where only the women are superheroes and a LOT of them are casually queer. plus you get to see all your favorite super ladies beating up Nazis!! including Batwoman, who’s canonically Jewish!! A JEWISH LESBIAN BEATING UP NAZIS WITH A BASEBALL BAT, WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT??? also the original writer Marguerite Bennett is bi, ayyyy
DC also has James Tynion IV’s run on Detective Comics (it starts with issue #934), which follows the Batfamily in the current main DC universe. Batwoman is one of the main characters, and a Batfam supporting character named Harper Row was confirmed as bisexual in this series. (also I think Harper is going to be a hero herself again and be more of a main cast member soon?? I’m a little behind.) there’s a lot of action-y stuff but it also focuses a lot on the team dynamics, and it’s one of my favorite DC series EVER. and James Tynion IV is also bi!
and if you want MORE BATWOMAN, Marguerite Bennett and James Tynion IV got together to write her newest series. I haven’t read it myself, but obviously I like both of the writers involved AND if you don’t have a lot of DC background I believe it starts with Batwoman’s origin story so you’ll have a bit of a primer.
also from DC there’s Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti’s Harley Quinn run, which is ridiculously fun. Harley’s sexuality isn’t really the focus of the story, but Poison Ivy shows up and they’re pretty obviously girlfriends. this is the comic that the panel of them waking up in bed together with puppies comes from, btw.
from Marvel there’s Gabby Rivera’s America Chavez series, which I haven’t read yet but really want to, because I adored Rivera’s first novel. America’s an interdimensional asskicking teenage Latina lesbian superhero, being written by a queer Latina writer, which is overall pretty freakin rockin.
outside of DC and Marvel:
Noelle Stevenson’s Lumberjanes series is aimed at a slightly younger demographic, but it’s great for everyone. think Gravity Falls + all girls’ summer camp. two of the girls have mutual crushes on each other, and one of the other girls is trans and also implied to have a crush on one of her female friends. and later in the series a nonbinary camper joins them! it’s really cute and really friendship focused and A++
if Lumberjanes is a cinnamon roll series then The Wicked and the Divine is the sinnamon roll of the bunch. basically it’s gods reincarnated in the modern day + pop culture + everyone is queer (and most of the main cast are people of color as well). the main character is Laura Wilson, a bisexual and biracial god fangirl. it’s a lot of conspiracy murder betrayal sexy conspiracy craziness, and the art is GORGEOUS.
it’s technically a ~graphic novel~ and not a comic, but Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home is kind of, like, classic gay literature. it’s an autobiographical account of Bechdel discovering that she was a lesbian as well as coming to terms with her relationship with her father, who was also queer but closeted. fair warning that this is not a /happy/ book; tw for suicide, parental neglect/abuse, and adults having sex with teenagers.
full disclosure, Black Hammer isn’t that queer, especially compared to everything else on this list, but one of the main characters is gay, and since the comic is kinda really obscure I want to boost it where I can. I don’t want to spoil anything, but said character was pinging my gaydar from a mile away I was SO SO HAPPY when it turned out I was right. also it’s just, like, a REALLY freakin good comic. the second volume doesn’t come out until next year but I am SO READY.
HAPPY READING
