heyfightme:

I am a bad, lazy lesbian: I haven’t been putting in anywhere near enough effort to finding, consuming, supporting, and creating media featuring WLW. I know some of y’all feel the same way. I’m calling a stop to it for myself! Join me, lads. This post has some starting points for hunting down the elusive WLW for people who don’t know where to begin.

Find Those Gay Girls!

On TV and in Film

  • Autostraddle has a regular column (questionably) called ‘Boobs on Your Tube’ that gives a rundown of where the WLW are on TV, and what they are doing, with (I think) enough info to let you decide if you’ll be satisfied or not
  • The GLAAD Wrap is another regular rundown of LGBT+ media, which can be easily mined for the WLW representation
  • Queer/LGBT+ film festivals are goldmines for WLW-centric movies, even if you don’t have a chance to see them at the festival itself. For example, the Melbourne Queer Film Festival program showed me at least 10 WLW movies that I either hadn’t heard of or had forgotten were coming out (and look, The Big Queer Film Festival List!)

In Books

Online

If you’re looking for content actually produced by WLW, the webcomics, web series, and books are probably your best bet. I really like the GLAAD Wrap because it also gives details of WLW-produced things that might not necessarily include central WLW characters (e.g. The Chi, written by Lena Waithe) which is still really important to support! Giving jobs to WLW creators makes it more likely we’ll get better WLW rep.

Anyway, join me in the WLW hunt, and don’t forget to be loud about it! Give money to WLW creators if/when you can, and spread the word as much as possible. We have to prove there is demand if we want to get more supply.
