ravenclawfairy: I want to read more about Sappho. Do you have recommendations for books about her life, or good translations of her poems? (I'm a little worried about randomly buying a translation and getting a book where they've erased all mentions of lesbianism or changed female pronouns to male or something like that) Anne Carson’s translation (If Not, Winter) definitely seems to the most well-respected translation. I read it and enjoyed it. As for books about her life, I’ve only read one so far that is solely about Sappho, and I wasn’t a huge fan. I do have a bunch on my TBR, but since I haven’t read them yet, I can’t say definitively which one is the best:
The book I read was Searching for Sappho: The Lost Songs and World of the First Woman Poet by Philip Freeman, which was okay, but it just felt very surface level, like you could get most of the information by reading the Wikipedia article. I hope that helps!
