  • diplomat MC, who arrives at the center of the empire to discover her predecessor has been murdered
  • sort of a murder mystery 
  • but also great court intrigue 
  • f/f romance
  • focuses on imperialism and colonialism
  • the author developed different cultures inside the empire (up to local media, historical accounts, poetry, linguistics)
  • deals with the power of narratives and how literature and language can shape a person
  • partly inspired by the Mexica and middle period Byzantium
  • great portrayal of what it’s like to exist in between spaces and knowing you won’t ever be accepted by the culture you want to be part of
