I adore this blog, firstly, I used to think that lesbian literature was a rarity before I found you~ So sorry if you've compiled a list like this before that I haven't found, but I was wondering if you had any kind of recommendation list for fantasy novels, particularly medieval fantasy, that feature a queer femme protagonist? Thank you very much!! Thank you! Happy to help! This list of Lesbian Fantasy books should give you a place to start. I don’t personally know of any lesbian fantasy books where the main character actively identifies as femme, unfortunately. As for queer women medieval fantasy books, here are a few I know of:
The only ones I’ve read personally are Kushiel’s Dart and Fire Logic, but I enjoyed both of them! (Kushiel’s Dart is about half court politics and half BDSM sex, iirc.) [image description: a graphic with book covers in the background. The text overlaid is “ANGSTY LESBIAN ROMANCE *With a happy ending”. The covers are Behind the Pine Curtain by Gerri Hill, When Dreams Tremble by Radclyffe, Keeping You a Secret by Julie Anne Peters, 96 Hours by Georgia Beers, Hearts and Flowers Border by L.T. Smith, Jericho by Ann McMan, Sanctuary by I. Beacham, Lessons by Kim Pritekel, and Coming Home by Lois Cloarec Hart] Angsty Lesbian Romance Novels with Happy Endings(More at the Goodreads list) For more lesbian lit lists, check out The Lesbrary Goodreads Project! Anonymous: I'm new to this whole genre of books that represent lesbian/bi/etc females as leads and I'm kind of lost there seems to be a lot to sift through. Id really appreciate it if you could help me by recommending good fantasy f/f works? As a young person who has been struggling to figure out their sexuality/identity for years, it really would help a lot to read about these girls in the format that I've loved for years Thanks a bunch, love the blog! I found it and I haven't stopped since lol xoxo Thanks so much! My favourite les/bian fantasy books, linked to their reviews: The Narrows by m. craig: Questers, magicweavers, magic instead of electricity, all in a Portland-like hipster setting. Fire Logic by Laurie J. Marks (linked to Mfred’s review because hers is better): a fantasy world where homophobia does not exist. Nobody cares that she’s attracted to women. Such a relief after reading a bunch of coming out stories. Hellebore & Rue: Tales of Queer Women and Magic edited by JoSelle Vanderhooft and Catherine Lundoff: The title speaks for itself. Also that cover. Indigo Springs by A.M. Dellamonica: This one will appeal to you if you liked the TV show Warehouse 13. Similarly, this is a realistic world. Except that there is magic contaminating our world, mutating things, but also being channeled into objects that perform specific magic tasks. The main character is bisexual. The Salt Roads by Nalo Hopkinson: I can’t explain this book, and it’s probably not exactly fantasy, but it is amazing. The Second Mango by Shira Glassman: I haven’t done a review yet of this, but it’s a quick, fun read with jewish queer characters and a dragon. It’s a whole series, and this is the first one. Books that I’ve heard good things about and are on my TBR list: When Women Were Warriors series by Catherine M. Wilson, Santa Olivia by Jacqueline Carey, and The Telling by Ursula K. Le Guin.
