When I feel overwhelmed by shitty things happening in the world, my instinct (like many other peoples’) is to retreat from the world, maybe google some quokka pix from inside a comfy blanket fort. Another effective strategy is to find powerful words and gain strength from them – this particular quote popped up on my feed at just the right time, so I made a drawing of it.

[image description: an illustration of a starry night with shooting stars and the quotation from I am Your Sister: Collected and Unpublished Writings of Audre Lorde: "I want to live the rest of my life, however long or short, with as much sweetness as I can decently manage, loving all the people I love, & doing as much as I can of the work I still have to do. I am going to write fire until it comes out of my ears, my eyes, my noseholes,–everywhere, until it’s every breath I breathe. I going to do out like a / FUCKING / METEOR.” - Audre Lorde]

Audre Lorde saying “what woman here is so enamored of her own oppression that she cannot see her heel print upon another woman’s face?” has been my mood for the last few weeks

This is was what their mothers would say if she and her cousins ever told them the things they folded inside their hearts. Twice as many paths to trouble their mothers would whisper. As though their daughters loving both men and women meant they wanted all of them in the world. There was no way to tell their mothers the truth and make them believe it, that hearts that loved both boys and girls were no more reckless or easily won than any other heart. They loved who they loved. They broke how they broke. And the way it happened depended less on what was under their lovers’ clothes and more on what was wrapped inside their spirits.

I always have such need to merely talk to you. Even when I have nothing to talk about – with you I just seem to go right ahead and sort of invent it. I invent it for you. Because I never seem to run out of tenderness for you and because I need to feel you near. Excuse the bad writing and excuse the emotional overflow. What I mean to say, perhaps, is that, in a way, I am never empty of you; not for a moment, an instant, a single second.

And there is, for me, no difference between writing a good poem and moving into sunlight against the body of a woman I love.

During my twenties, my personal life was the hottest mess. The hottest. It will never be that messy again because I’ve grown up and I finally give enough of a damn about myself to avoid burning myself in that kind of fire.

I didn’t know why it made my heart sing loud to itself that a stranger thought I was a boy. It just did. Made me feel like he could look inside me and see some part of the truth of me in there.

But it did make me inexplicably sad that a stranger could see me, and my own family could not.

Gal Pal’d

[image description: a photo of a page from Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst. The text is “’… and I’d go down there to find she’d carved one of those ugly black radishes into a beautiful flower to have something pretty to give to me.’ Another tear trailed down Ellaeni’s cheek.

‘I’m so sorry, Ellaeni. I understand. Mare is like that for me. She’s my best friend. I would be lost without her,’ I said.

‘No, Claera is not only my friend … she’s my heart. My parents forbade me to speak of her while here at court. They don’t approve of someone of my rank associating with a cook.’ Ellaeni searched my face with hope and fear.

Understanding dawned on me. They had been lovers. I blushed over my mistake at comparing their relationship to mine with Mare.”]
